Thrift Store Makeover: DIY Vintage Santa Planter

I love hunting for neutral vintage Christmas decor, and last weekend, I bought the most adorable large vintage Santa planter from a fellow Lily & Birch Market vendor.

When I saw the planter, I knew it would be the perfect addition to my vintage Christmas collection.

It had the most adorable jolly face, perfectly imperfect crazing, and original maker stickers and markings.

I couldn't wait to bring it home and place one of my houseplants inside.

Seeing the vintage Santa planter on my entry table immediately gave me an idea.

Over the past several weeks, I saw the same clear vintage Santa cookie jar at my local Goodwill. It was missing a lid, so I never gave it a second thought.....until now.

I quickly headed back to Goodwill to see if the jar was still there and it was!

I immediately came home and turned it into a neutral vintage Santa planter.

This thrift store makeover is so effortless that I actually feel silly sharing. It's also so stinkin' adorable that I couldn't NOT share!

- Vintage or vintage-inspired Santa cookie jar

- Glossy white spray paint

- Clear wax

- Antique wax

- Paper towels

HOW TO MAKE A VINTAGE SANTA PLANTER

Make sure your jar is clean, dry, and free from any sticky label residue.

Vintage Santa jars and mugs are typically glossy, so I opted to use Rust-oleum gloss spray paint in pure white for the best authentic look.

To avoid drips, I sprayed multiple light coats of paint over the jar, making sure that each coat was dry before applying another coat.

I loved the new glossy look of the Santa jar, but it was a little too stark white compared to the authentic vintage planter.

To tone it down a bit and give it more of an authentic look, I "aged" the planter with clear and antique wax.

I applied clear wax to the planter first, then blended in dark antique wax to create a subtle touch of aged imperfection to the jar.

I absolutely love how the vintage Santa cookie jar turned vintage Santa planter turned out! You would never know by looking at it that it's not authentic.
