Modern Farmhouse Bassett Desk Makeover

A dated Bassett desk gets a fresh modern farmhouse makeover with paint and new hardware!

This girl has not only been cranking out furniture makeovers but has also found time to blog about them.  What is going on? haha

Last week, I shared a simple drop leaf side table makeover and since I had paint and bin pulls leftover I decided to create the same look on a dated Bassett desk.

I got kind of lucky finding this desk as it has been incredibly difficult to find good quality desks lately.  It definitely wasn't my style, but I knew I could give it a modern farmhouse makeover with minimal cost and effort.

- HOW TO GIVE A DATED DESK A MODERN FARMHOUSE MAKEOVER-

Just look at this little cutie.

Okay, maybe it's a little dated, but its petite size and ample storage make it perfect for smaller spaces.

I'm no stranger to rebuilding and framing furniture bases and knew building a  new base would be a quick and easy project that would completely transform this dated gem.

Most curvy bases on old furniture are attached with a few screws and are super easy to remove.   I was able to remove the trim on this desk in less than 2 minutes.  Then I measured and cut the 1" x 5" x 8' board into three pieces (at 45-degree angles) to frame out a new modern base.
I added wood glue to the desk before attaching the new base pieces with my Ryobi nailer.

I filled the holes with wood filler, sanded the entire desk, gave it three coats of General Finishes Lamp Black, distressed it around the edges, sealed the paint with finishing wax (I used dark antique wax on the areas where I sanded to darken the raw wood) then added my new favorite matte black bin pulls

I'm loving the black on black finish and the modern farmhouse vibe of this once dated Bassett desk!
