How to Make No Bake Sharpie Art Bowls

How to make inexpensive no bake Sharpie art bowls using dishwasher safe Mod Podge, Sharpie markers and Dollar Tree bowls!

It's a new month, which means it's time for a new Dollar Store DIY

About a month ago, I went on a Dollar Tree run and ended up taking pictures and putting together a list of my 50 favorite Dollar Tree items to hack makeover and update.  While there, I picked up four plain white bowls that I knew would be perfect for adding Sharpie art.  Creating Sharpie art on mugs and bowls is nothing new, but I wanted to share how easy it is to make no bake Sharpie art bowls that are also dishwasher safe.

I actually got the idea to add Sharpie art to basic white bowls after seeing black and white patterned stoneware measuring bowls on a wholesale site, Creative Co-op.

I loved the various black and white patterns and knew I could easily recreate them for a fraction of the price.  I headed to Dollar Tree and grabbed four white bowls then ran into Michaels to buy a couple OIL-BASED Sharpie pens (be sure to use a 40% off coupon!).

CAN YOU USE REGULAR SHARPIES ON CERAMIC?
No, do not use regular Sharpie markers on ceramic.  Be sure to buy oil-based markers for this Sharpie art project.  Not only do they adhere better to ceramic, but oil-based Sharpies will give you a more saturated black color.  Regular black Sharpies will appear more purple instead of black and smear, especially when applying the dishwasher safe Mod Podge

HOW TO MAKE DIY SHARPIE ART

STEP ONE:  Wash and dry bowls with hot soapy water.  You want to make sure you're starting with a clean surface, so it's important to remove any dust and/or labels from the bowls.  Another option is to use rubbing alcohol and a cotton ball to clean your bowls.

STEP TWO: Decide and plan out the designs you want to add to your bowls.  I chose to create four very simple and basic designs, but you can always choose one design for all four bowls.  The Sharpie art possibilities are endless!

STEP THREE: Start drawing designs on the bowls.  Remember, oil-based markers due take a few seconds to dry when applied to glass and ceramic, so be careful not to touch the ink while it is still wet.  If you do accidentally smear the ink you can use a Q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover to erase the ink.

I mostly freehanded the art on my Sharpie bowls, but if you're not loving the abstract look you can use a flex ruler to help make straighter and more exact lines.

STEP FOUR: After completing the designs on your bowls, apply a couple thin layers of dishwasher safe Mod Podge to seal the Sharpie.

STEP FIVE: Allow your bowls to cure.  Dishwasher safe Mod Podge takes 28 days to fully cure before it is safe to hand wash or put through the dishwasher (top shelf only).

I love the idea of making these fun abstract Sharpie bowls and using them as decor on open kitchen shelves.

You can use the bowls for food consumption (because the marker and Mod Podge are on the outside of the bowl), but keep in mind that although Mod Podge is safe and non-toxic it's not FDA approved.
