Recent Thrifting Finds and What's in my Garage

Happy Friday!   It's been a little slower around here the past few weeks because I've been busy thrifting, hunting for deals and painting and updating furniture.  If you missed the announcement, I'm joining my friend Cassie at Sweet Clover , a 1900's dairy barn in Frederick, MD that hosts a monthly vintage tag sale.  I've always loved thrifting and flipping furniture, but since I've only ever shopped for my own home I needed to get busy shopping for the barn.  I've been sharing a few of my finds on IG stories, but since I've been getting a lot of messages about my thrifting adventures I thought I would share a few of my recent finds here on the blog. ...

How to Make Vintage Flower Seed "Packets"

These vintage seed packets are perfect for  adding a touch of spring to your decor.  Display them in a basket or turn them into a garland.  Either way, they can make an adorable addition to your home for spring. It's almost May, the weather is getting warmer, perennials are making an appearance and it's almost time for Peony watch 2018.  I'd say that means it's a good time to share another quick and easy project for spring.   Last week, I shared  12 free vintage inspired printables , which included a set of vintage flower seed packets.   Although the images I shared weren't exactly what I was looking for, they did spark an idea.  I turned to ETSY, searched for an instant download of vintage floral seed packets and stumbled upon these beauties for 50% off.   They were exactly what I had in mind and the perfect images for creating DIY seed packets. ...

Painted Vintage Mid-Century Campaign Desk

A Mid-Century Dixie campaign desk gets a fresh new look with General Finishes Coastal Blue Milk Paint.  Over 2 years ago I was lucky enough to come across a Mid-Century Dixie campaign desk at my local Goodwill.   I was pretty excited since it's not too often that you come across campaign style pieces at thrift stores.  At the time, I had no idea where I was going to put it or what I was going to do with it, but I knew I had to have it.  Well, here we are over two years later and I FINALLY got motivated to give this little desk an update.  Sadly, I still don't have space for it in my own home, but it will be going to Sweet Clover where I hope it will find a new home.   I strayed from my normal go-to paint colors of black, white and gray and chose my new favorite blue, General Finishes Coastal Blue.  This color is so pretty and a beautiful contrast to the original aged brass hardware.   ...

Before and After: How to Refinish a Solid Wood Table

Learn how to easily refinish furniture without the mess of harsh chemicals and strippers.  Have you ever passed up a piece of thrifted or hand me down furniture because you thought it would be too much trouble to refinish?   I'm here to tell you it's much easier (and less messy) than you may think.  Sometimes furniture is too damaged and painting is your only option, but when solid wood furniture is in good condition refinishing should always be considered.  Earlier this week I ran in Goodwill and found an inexpensive coffee table.   It was solid wood and sturdy, but the finish was flaking off and was in need of a much needed facelift.  The style of the table was a little more country than I would have liked, but I knew with new stain, a little paint and a splash of color I could give it a fresh new look.  ...

Vintage Inspired Succulent Planters & Tips for Proper Care

Tips and tricks for caring for succulents and fun planter ideas for a unique look!  It's no secret that I've never been good at keeping plants alive.  It's partly due to the fact that I'm horrible at remembering to water them and partly because I'm pretty sure I unintentionally put them in the darkest spots of our home.  Regardless of my black thumb, I really do enjoy having live plants around and try my hardest to keep them alive.  Recently, I bought two plants and even though they are only marginally surviving, I decided to try my hand at succulents.  I headed to Home Depot to pick up a few succulents then swung by Goodwill and a local thrift store in search of fun "planters".  ...

Two Tone MCM Highboy Dresser Makeover

A little paint and TLC goes a long way in updating this beautiful MCM Dixie Highboy dresser. Sometimes thrifting can be a total miss and sometimes it can result in a cart full of treasures and awesome furniture scores.  Last week, my mom and I headed to a few thrift stores and it ended up being one of those trips that I was thankful we took her Expedition.  Not only did I find some great smaller items, but I also scored an awesome mid-century modern Dixie highboy dresser.  I'm always drawn to MCM pieces and knew right away that it had to come home with me.  Just look at the beautiful hardware and detail on the drawers.  Okay, so there's a few knicks and chips in the veneer and it looks like something chewed one of the legs, BUT with a little TLC I knew I could make it beautiful again. ...
