DIY Felt and Leather Clutch

It's the second Wednesday of the month, which means it's time for another Monthly DIY Challenge!
An easy DIY tutorial for creating an inexpensive felt and faux leather clutch. www.littlehouseoffour.com

This month's challenge item was felt and I admit I was a bit stumped on what I wanted to create.   I thought about making a Christmas project, but knew I would never be able to top last year's rustic felt Christmas trees.  I eventually got the idea to make something that could also double as a gift, after all it is gift giving season.

I dug through my fabric and found some faux leather and polka dot fabric leftover from the leather bottom fabric totes I made last year.  I decided to pair gray felt with the two fabrics to make a simple clutch.  It ended up being a little flimsy for a purse, but it would work great for storing jewelry when traveling.

HOW TO MAKE LEATHER AND FABRIC CLUTCH
I'm going to apologize right now for the lack of process pictures and bad photography.  I ended up doing this project late one evening, which made for less than favorable lighting.  Thankfully, these little clutches are fairly easy to make and require little directions :)

I'm not sure this is the correct way to sew, but I think this little clutch turned out pretty good for not having a plan.

First, cut out your fabric:

- 2 5x18 pieces of gray felt
- 2 2x3 pieces of felt (to be used for reinforcement for the snaps)
- 1 4x18 piece of faux leather
- 1 12x18 piece for the liner

With right sides together, pin the gray felt to the leather and hem.  (I used a 1/4 inch seam allowance)

With right sides together again, pin the liner fabric to the piece of felt and leather.  You'll also want to pin the small reinforcement felt pieces to the center of the leather.

Hem a 1/4 inch seam around the perimeter leaving a small opening to turn fabric right sides out.

After you turn your fabric right side out iron your seams flat, including the area that was left open.

Fold the fabric over itself and hem a seam along the felt as close to the edge as possible.

Grab one of your fasteners a hammer and scrap piece of wood.  Mark where you want to add your snap and hammer it together.  (Directions are on the back of the package)

Now you have a felt and faux leather clutch!

I did end up going back and ironing the seam so I was able to see the interior fabric when my purse was closed.

  1. This is so pretty, Katie! Even if it's not sturdy enough to use as a purse, I love having little bags like this to keep things organized inside of a bigger bag. I don't do much sewing but this looks really easy to make!
