DIY Flannel Christmas Bulbs {Home For Christmas Blog Hop}

I hope you all had a fantastic weekend!  I was able to take the kids to see Santa as well as finish up some shopping and work on a few projects.  I've been in full blown Christmas mode lately, but I promise I've got some great non holiday projects coming up.  Until then, I'm thrilled to be participating in another blog hop hosted by Hometalk and County Living!

I've been really drawn to using red in my Christmas decor this year.  I might even have a slight obsession with a certain red and gray flannel that I used throughout my Christmas tour.  I love it so much that I couldn't resist using some leftover fabric to make a couple flannel Christmas bulbs.

These lights are pretty easy to make with only minimal sewing skills required.  I promise if you have a sewing machine you can make these lights.

I started by free-handing a Christmas lightbulb, which I used as a template to cut out my fabric.

With right sides together I sewed around the outer edge, leaving the top open.

I turned them right sides out and stuffed them until I was happy with their shape.

I folded in the rough edges then glued a wooden spool to the top of each flannel bulb.  (I used gold leaf Rub 'N Buff to make the spools gold)

I then cut a piece of thick wire and wrapped it around the base of the spool.

If you want to make them into strands of lights you can glue jute to each one like I did.  They would also look cute displayed in a bowl.

You'll notice that the ones below have different tops.  I realized after completing my first strand that I didn't have enough spools and could not find matching ones ANYWHERE!  I ended up having to pull them off and use similar ones that I found.  The worst part is I decided not to hang them as one long connecting strand and went through all that trouble for nothing. #bloggerfail
