Vintage Inspired Balsa Wood Number Tags {Monthly DIY Challenge}

Hey, hey....welcome back to another Monthly DIY Challenge!

Create vintage inspired number tags with inexpensive balsa wood.

On the second Wednesday of every month a group of some of my favorite blogger friends and I get together and challenge each other to create a project based on a particular theme or material.  This month's theme was craft wood and if you've been around this blog for awhile then you know I LOVE Balsa wood.  It's such a great craft/DIY product that is inexpensive and can easily be cut with the swipe of a razor blade.

8 amazing craft wood projects

I've completed a few balsa wood projects in the past (faux specimen cabinet, organized cork board and file magazine holders) and lucky for me I had plenty scrap pieces laying around that I was determined to use.  I was also determined to make something that was A. useful and B. would make a great addition to our current décor.  I had no desire to make something that would get thrown in my craft closet to collect dust.

I wondered around my house (which I tend to do when I'm bored and looking for a project) and decided that a few wire baskets could use some new tags.  A few years ago I updated the original metal numbers with a little gold leaf Rub 'n Buff, but I was ready for a change.

Do you all remember the vintage inspired signs I created back in July?  They were so easy and fun to create that I decided to use the same concept to create number tags for this months craft wood theme.

Here's What You'll Need:

The steps are super easy and you can have these tags done in no time.

5. Immediately brush on aging dust to give the tags a distressed look.  (Apply generously around the edges)

I ended up using double sided tape to attach my tags, but you could always drill a hole in the top of each tag, add jute and hang them from a basket.

I love how they stand out a bit more than the previous number tags!

  1. Katie, these are awesome! I was just shopping for baskets the other day, and you can pay big money buying a basket with a number tag on it like these. So glad you were able to make on so easily:)

  8. I've made similar ones with letters, instead of balsa wood have used the laminate samples from Home Depot. They work great and already have the holes punched at the top.

  9. These are adorable!! I love balsa wood, but sadly I've never crafted with it. These would be so cute and are the perfect way to spruce up baskets! :)

  10. HI Katie,
    How can I cut these balsa wood rectangles? Do I need to have a saw?
