Modern Farmhouse Dining Room: Painted Vintage Server

While my husband was away enjoying a relaxing weekend trip with the guys I stayed home and cared for a very sick little girl.  I always tease my husband that he picks the best times to go away.  Granted, everyone was healthy when he left it never fails that I end up single parenting at the worst times. Friday night was going as any normal night would until I was awaken at 1:45am with the words I dread most, "Mom, I just threw up."  Let me just say, when you are not prepared to be sick you end up with a major mess on your hands.  Thankfully, I have great neighbors who kept our little guy occupied on Saturday while I cleaned carpets, washed sheets and cared for our sweet little girl.  When she finally was able to sleep you can bet I jumped at the chance to do a little painting project for the dining room.

You would think painting a piece of furniture would be pretty straight forward, but not when you're trying to pick the perfect gray.  I ended up grabbing every gray, white, cream and black chalk paint I owned in search of finding the perfect gray paint color.

Mixing a custom gray paint

Most of the shades I came up with were really pretty, but just weren't right for the space.  They were either too brown, too green, too light or too dark.  Finally, after nearly 15 custom color attempts I landed on the perfect color.

Before I share the after, let's take a look back at what the server looked like before.

It was a really pretty blue, but I was ready for a change.  After two coats of chalk paint and one coat of wax the server was much brighter and perfect for the dining room

You'll probably notice that I moved my favorite black and white wall clock from the basement up to our dining room.  The one thing I love about this piece is that it looks amazing anywhere.

If you follow me on Facebook or Instagram then you already know I purchased a new rug, but I also bought new chairs that I LOVE.  I'm still debating whether or not to get two more, but for now they sit at the head of the table.

I also purchased an adorable geo terrarium that I found for 50% off then filled it with a few faux succulents.  The candlestick holders aren't new, but they did get a quick makeover with a few coats of Sherwin-Williams Iron Ore.

I'm still waiting for a few new pieces to arrive then I'm calling this room complete.

  3. The overall look is amazing! I personally can't do interior design like this because I'm absolutely hopeless at coordinating decorations and accessories on table tops! I mean, life is cluttered enough as it is with the stuff that ought to be in storage to begin with without having to place additional displayables on counter tops, am I right?

  4. Do you know the name of the original blue color? I need to paint my buffet that color and I really like it. Thanks!
