Vaseline Distressed Memo Board {Monthly DIY Challenge}

A perfectly distressed DIY memo board using Vaseline!

It's Monthly DIY Challenge time!  For those of you new around here, every month a few of my bloggy pals get together and challenge each other to create a project based on a particular product or theme.   This months theme was pegboard and to be honest I wasn't too excited.  All the pegboard projects that came to mind either had already been done before or involved the traditional organizing projects.  Don't get me wrong, I love organizing with pegboard, but since our garage isn't to the organizing point yet I had to get creative.

So, what did I end up doing?  I completely stretched this pegboard project and created something that didn't necessarily need pegboard.

I started by building a basic frame using a thin sheet of wood and lattice strips.

After the base of the frame and strips were stained I glued them together then left them to dry.

Can I make a confession?

I actually made this frame a few months ago for another project that didn't work out.   It had been sitting in our garage collecting dust ever since.  It wasn't until I started cleaning out the garage that I got the idea to add a fun pop of green and use it in our mudroom.

I knew I wanted a distressed look, so I decided to try the Vaseline trick in lieu of sanding.  Have you tried it before?  It's so quick and easy!

You just rub the vaseline where you want the piece to be distressed (I used a Q-tip), paint then wipe off the vaseline once the paint is dry.

Now that I had my frame prepped it was time to add the pegboard.  I simply cut a piece to fit snug inside the frame then glued heavy brown paper to the front.

The pegboard was then attached to the frame using wood glue.

I finished off the memo board with a rustic clip an inspiring quote from my friend Bre from Brepurposed.  You can head over and print your own or check out all her other fabulous printables.

The kids head off to school every morning through this door and now I have the perfect place to display encouraging quotes or hang their original artwork.
