Six Simple Ways to Supercharge Your Style

Love your home and supercharge your style with these 6 simple tips!

It's taken me years to appreciate and love our home and turn it into a place that reflects my style.  I've made countless decorating and painting mistakes, but through those mistakes,  have learned what I like, what I dislike and how I want our home to feel.

Defining your style and creating a home you love doesn't always come easy.  I'm hoping these six simple ideas will help you supercharge your style, make decorating easier and help you create a home that reflects what you love.

6 ways to supercharge your style

number one way to supercharge your style
BE ABLE TO DEFINE WHAT YOU WANT
Don't feel like you have to stick to one particular style, but do have an idea of what you like and dislike and how you want your home to feel.   If you walk into a furniture or home decor store you should be able to describe what you like, what you are looking for and easily be able to pick out items that catch your eye.

 DO YOUR RESEARCH

Browse stores, flip through magazines and pin images that inspire you.  It's the best way to get a feel for the colors, textures, and patterns you want in your home.

Third way to supercharge your style
 CHANGE THINGS OFTEN

I'm all about thrifty decorating, but that doesn't mean you can't change things often.  Shopping your home and moving decor is a great way to change the look and feel of your rooms for free.  A home should represent you, the seasons and your mood.  It should reflect the people who live in it, your travels, interests, experiences, and hobbies.

 TAKE PHOTOS
Inspiration is all around us.  Don't be afraid to take inspiring photos of your surroundings.  Do you like the tile in a restaurant bathroom?   Snap a picture.  What about the light fixture in a local antique shop?  Snap a picture, save it for later and let it inspire you in your own home.

Fifth way to supercharge your style
SHOP VINTAGE AND SECOND HAND
You know I love filling my home with unique vintage decor and second-hand finds.  Adding a unique piece of furniture or a one of a kind fabric is a great way to personalize your home.  Take a risk, shop local,  have an open mind and let interesting pieces reflect your style and personality.

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF SAMPLES
Even the most seasoned decorator benefits from testing out samples before pulling the trigger.  They allow you to narrow down choices and pick what's perfect for your home.  Before settling on a paint color, paint a piece of cardstock and tape it to your wall.  Get a feel for how the color looks at different times of the day before deciding to paint an entire space.  Grab a sample of fabric and drape it over your sofa before buying enough to make pillows.

Neutral paint samples

It takes time to learn your style, your likes, dislikes and how you want your home to feel.  It's okay to make mistakes, change your mind and feel a bit overwhelmed.  Just follow your heart, trust your instincts and allow your experiences, interests, and personality to show in your home.

  2. Hi Katie! Love your blog!

What is the original purpose of the room featured in the first picture on this post? Was it a formal dining room?

    1. It is actually part of an addition we added a few years ago. It will eventually become part of our kitchen, but until then, I am using the space as my office.

  3. I agree about changing things up. We have a little cabin about two hours from where we live. We are painting all the cheap paneling white but I have one wall behind the cupboards and stove where there isn't much wall at all. I'm going to paint that area my new favorite dark color, Iron Ore by SW. It's a bold step for me but it's a cabin so what better place to experiment, right? Glad I found your blog.
