{Trash to Treasure} DIY Coffee Bar Sign

Yes, I have been making a crazy amount of signs lately.  No, I won't apologize.  Not when you snag the perfect $3.00 sign from Goodwill!

I knew this sign was coming home with me the minute I spotted it on the shelf.  It was just begging for an update and I couldn't wait to bring it home and turn it into something more my style.  I'm sure someone probably worked very hard staining, painting and stenciling this sign, but I wasn't about to let that stop me from giving it a little update.  Anything at Goodwill is fair game for a makeover anyway, right?

I started by painting the outer frame black and the inner part white.

Next was the fun part!  Using my favorite Elmer's adhesive letters and Mod Podge I glued letters onto the wood spelling "Coffee Bar."

I have used these letters SO MANY TIMES and they are awesome.  I don't have a silhouette machine (I just can't bring myself to splurge on one), so these letters make sign making super easy.

I then took my favorite waxing creme and aging dust and "aged" the wood.

I hung the sign by my coffee maker in the kitchen (I used command strips to avoid damaging my new peel and stick tile), but honestly I'm not sure I'll be keeping the sign.

I made it before I made the market sign and now I kind of think it's too much signage going on in my small kitchen.  I've even thought about offering the sign as a giveaway.  Just because it doesn't work in my kitchen doesn't mean it won't look amazing in one of yours.  As soon as I decide it's fate, I promise to give you all first dibs.

Regardless of whether or not I keep the sign, it was an amazing deal and worth every bit of it's $3.00 price tag.

  1. Nice work Katie, I like the effect with the wax crème and aging dust. Looks like something you would pay way more than $3.00 for.
    Happy Thursday!

  3. I love this SO much - it's perfect and especially since you reused what you had (and without an expensive machine, either!). Inspiring!
