Vintage Modern Christmas Mudroom and Tips For Saving on Holiday Decorating

Budget-friendly Christmas decorating ideas and tips to save money on Holiday decor.

December is almost halfway over, which means many of you are probably done Christmas decorating.  For those still decorating, like myself, I wanted to share a few helpful tips for saving money on holiday decor.

It's easy to blow your budget and get carried away on Christmas decor, but with a little planning and creativity, you can create a beautifully decorated holiday home for less.

Today, I'm sharing my vintage modern Christmas mudroom, but I used these same money-saving tips when decorating the entry for Christmas.

- 5 HELPFUL TIPS TO SAVE MONEY ON HOLIDAY DECOR -

1. USE WHAT YOU ALREADY HAVE
It can be tempting to go out and buy new Christmas decorations every year, but new decor can add up quickly.   Instead, think about how you can use your existing decor in new and different ways.  Switch up the walls and rooms where you normally hang holiday art and create new displays and vignettes.   It's amazing how different decor will look simply by placing it in a different room or location.  If you do feel the need to buy new decor, focus on a few key pieces that can be used year after year.

2. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF FRESH (FREE!) GREENERY, BERRIES AND LOGS
I tend to reuse faux greenery from year to year, but I do like mixing in fresh greenery where I can.  This year, I was determined to find affordable fresh greenery to hang along the new open stair railing, so I splurged and bought a beautiful red cedar and juniper berry garland.  Normally, I like to pick up greenery left behind at the tree farm, cut branches or berries from around the house or use logs from the woodpile.  If you don't have access to these items around your own home, ask neighbors, friends, family or local tree farms if they have extra tree cuttings available.

3. SHOP THRIFT STORES, AUCTIONS and FACEBOOK MARKETPLACE
It should be no surprise that my favorite places to find affordable decor are thrift stores and auctions.  Buying used saves money and is the best way to find unique vintage decor that can't be found in big box stores.   Prices do tend to be a little higher the month before Christmas, so be sure to keep your eye out and shop all year long for the best deals.

Some of my favorite recent secondhand vintage Christmas finds are Santa blow molds, Shiny Brite ornaments, Santa mugs, sleighbells and a pair of adorable brass deer.

White ice skates are also common in thrift stores and perfect for holiday decorating.  Fill them with greenery (fresh or faux) and hang them from hooks, a vintage sled or antique window.  Use inexpensive decorative bowls and glass jars for an easy way to display vintage ornaments.

4. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF END OF SEASON/HOLIDAY SALES
A lot of craft stores markdown holiday inventory weeks before Christmas (Michael's, Joann Fabrics and Hobby Lobby tend to have 50%-60% off sales), which makes it a great time to buy faux greenery and holiday decor for a fraction of the price.  Home Decor stores (HomeGoods, Target, etc.) tend to wait until the day after Christmas to markdown inventory.  Either way, wait for a sale to get the biggest bang for your buck.
