A Real Life Messy Home Tour

An imperfect and real life messy home tour of a DIY and home decor blogger!

"Don't compare your behind the scenes with someone else's highlight reel."

It's hard to imagine the beautifully decorated spaces you see on blogs and Instagram could ever be less than perfect.  It's easy to assume these gorgeous spaces are always impeccably neat and perfectly organized.   Well, guess what?  I'm here to tell you that the majority of bloggers, Instagrammers and influencers do not always live a perfectly neat and organized life.  I've talked to many blogger friends and there's almost always a mess behind the camera.

It can be so easy to compare our less than perfect homes with those that seem so perfect.  I know I sometimes get discouraged with the way my home looks.  The paper piles that need to be sorted, the laundry overflowing from baskets, the never-ending dog hair that needs to be vacuumed, but then I remember the mess is what makes our house a home.  The mess tells a story and is creating memories.

-ENTRYWAY-
Real life messy entryway

I never want you to feel that my home is always tidy and perfectly decorated.  I want to be as transparent as possible and share my life as I live it on a regular basis, mess and all.

Regardless if you walk in our front door or mudroom door, you will more than likely be greeted with random furniture that needs to be staged and photographed or painted and updated.

-LIVING ROOM-Messy home tour-living room
There is ALWAYS a basket of laundry on the floor that needs to be folded and usually stacks of laundry that need to be put away.  It's my least favorite chore, so I usually put it off as long as I can.

The round coffee table in our living room tends to be a catch-all for random school papers, controllers, nerf bullets and anything else that the kids or I toss on the table.

The other side of our living room actually looks pretty good, BUT the kids were off school for a snow day when I took these pictures so it went downhill fast.

-HALLWAY-
Our hallway usually stays pretty mess free minus the occasional stray dog bone, dusty light fixture and random ball of dog hair.

-DINING ROOM-
We had already cleared off the table from breakfast, so the dining room is pretty tidy minus a random blanket on the floor and an Ipad on the table from my son.

-KITCHEN-
Our kitchen was abnormally clean this day, but there are still dishes in the sink and paint brushes on the counter.

The little counter next to our stove is always cluttered with mail, school papers, random tools, paint and DIY supplies that need to be put away.   It definitely tends to be a major drop zone in our home.

-OFFICE-
Remember what I said about random furniture being in our entryway and office?  There's currently a long MCM dresser that we brought into my office because I have the garage packed with furniture that I need to take up to my booth at Sweet Clover Barn.

-MUDROOM-
The kids usually throw their jackets and bookbags on the theatre chairs and since they were off from school the bags are still there.   Along with a random football, Christmas decor and a bag of clothes that I need to take to Goodwill.  Let's not forget to point out the dust and dog hair, which is an endless battle in this room.

I'm not sure what's happening on the top of the vintage hardware cabinet, but I'm pretty sure it's currently acting as a drop zone for random decor and my husband's odds and ends.

-BEDROOM-
I'm proud to say, I've been making my bed almost every day this year.  The difference its made in my mood when I walk into the room is amazing.   Granted, I may not make it perfectly, but it's made and that's all that matters.

My vacuum is always out and today it just so happens to be in our bedroom.  Usually, it's in the dining room, but you just never know where it will end up.

There's usually a pile of laundry laying on the floor next to the hamper, but I just so happened to put a load of laundry in earlier today.  I also just bought a new hamper from HomeGoods and it holds a lot more clothes than my old hamper.  Now I not only get to do laundry less often but my dirty clothes are looking a bit more stylish while they wait to be washed.

-BASEMENT-
Doesn't everyone have a random mattress in their basement?  No?  Just me?  Our kids use it as a trampoline and wrestling mat, but we're also keeping it for an extra place to sleep while we're living in our basement during our upstairs renovations (more on that another day).

You'll also find random balls and nerf gun bullets laying around the basement.  I gave up the battle of picking them up and instead try to focus on the fun my kids have and the memories they are making while having Nerf gun battles.

Thanks to a sick cat we had to trash the rug in the sitting area of our basement.  I have my eye on THIS rug, but until it's restocked the floor is going to look a little bare.

My daughter's art table is a mess, but instead of looking at the mess I choose to embrace and encourage her creativity.

As much as I enjoy styling, decorating and sharing the pretty spaces of our home I want you to know that our home is far from perfect.  There's usually dog hair on the floor, crumbs on the counters, dishes in the sink and laundry on the floor.  I don't keep a perfect home and that is okay.  I am not failing and I don't ever want you to feel like you are failing.  I also don't want you to get discouraged and compare your home to others.  Remember, what you see on the internet is just a highlight and not always reality.  Give yourself grace and enjoy and love your home just the way it is.

  1. Can I just say THANK YOU! It is very discouraging to see all the beautiful homes on the web and wonder why I can't get mine to look like those. Your home is beautiful and even better with the fact that you allow your family to be themselves. Thank you for posting this one!

  2. I can not thank you enough for posting this. It's really nice to see how the "perfect house" really is just a "prefect home". I was just telling my husband how I need to work on not comparing our home to all of the things I see on Pinterest because those people are either crazy or don't have 3 kids like us to destroy it ;-)

  6. Another grateful reader here! We've been trying to get our house decorated and refurbished for almost 3 years now, and it seems such an upward struggle at times, with clutter and paint brushes in the kitchen that drive me mad because it spoils the look of the beautiful wooden worktops that I made myself. The constant fur balls from the dog, and the way my husband has of just leaving things where he puts them down. So it's really WONDERFUL to see that my home is 'normal' after all, and that even bloggers like yourself, have to cope with this sort of detritus. Thanks SO much for sharing!

  8. This is such a refreshing post! Thank you for sharing your 'messiness'. It is so hard to keep a house clean and tidy with little ones running around (and a messy husband). This makes me feel much better about my not-always-perfect home!

  9. Thank you so much! I live on a farm with my husband, 2 sons, and 2 dogs. You can just imagine what my house looks like most of the time. I could spend 4 hours a day just cleaning up the mess in the house but I don't. I do what needs to be done to keep things at a "B" level so I can keep my sanity.

  10. Being an interior designer, I’ve been to many continued learning seminars. One that always stuck with me was the study about organization styles. We are all either filers, or pilers in our organization styles....Filers always have everything in its place...Pilers are people that tend to organize by stacking things so they are visual. I definitely fall in the later. All of my to do items are stacked on my desk so that I am reminded of what I need to do. I think pilers are maybe more creative and tend to jump from project to project....or are moms being pulled in many directions. Either way, neither is a right or wrong way to be. Embrace who you are and know you are not alone.

  12. Thank you for sharing. It helps me to know my house doesn’t have to be perfect. It always looks “lived in”.

  13. I echo all the thank-yous. There are some other blogs that have done the same thing but honestly. even their mess looked staged. Thanks for your honesty. BTW, what is the color of your walls in your living room?
