How to Transfer an Image to Wood with a Free Pumpkin Printable

A free pumpkin patch printable that you can easily transfer to wood for the perfect rustic fall decor!

I'm all about going cheap when it comes to seasonal decorating.  Let's face it, who wants to spend a lot of money on decor that's only displayed a few months out of the year?  In an effort to keep costs down this fall, I've updated Dollar Tree pumpkins,  made my own fall sign, and now I'm sharing a pumpkin patch printable that I turned into rustic fall art.

Almost three years ago I made pallet artwork for my son's room using a photo transfer technique and I thought it would be perfect to use the same method to create free fall art.  I had scrap wood leftover from my pallet wall, so all I needed to do was create a printable and I had instant art.

- Scrap wood (I used leftover plywood from my plank walls)
- Pumpkin printable (link at end of post)
- Paint (I used black milk paint and white chalk paint
- Sandpaper
- Paint brush

I wanted a rustic distressed look, so I applied black paint around the edges of my wood then added two coats of white paint.

Once the paint was dry it was time to add the printable.  I reversed the image before printing, so it would read correctly when transferred.

I applied a generous amount of Mod Podge to my printable then pressed it firmly against the wood and let it dry overnight.

To reveal the image, I wet the paper with a dish rag and gently scrubbed until the top layer of paper peeled away.  Don't scrub too hard or you'll remove part of your image.  Wetting image for photo transfer

When I was happy with how my image looked I let the wood dry, sanded the edges to reveal some of the black paint underneath then sealed the wood with water based poly.

  1. This is so stinking cute and looks great!! I usually just mod podge the image on the wood directly but it limits me to using a piece of wood only a big as the paper. I am totally going to try this! :)

  4. Does it matter if you print with an ink jet or laser printer?

    1. That's a good question. I've only used an ink jet printer, so I'm not sure.

  5. How on earth did yall keep the ink from smearing when applying the mod podge??

    1. I didn't have any issues with the ink smearing, but if you are you could always apply the Mod Podge to the wood instead of the printable. I hope that helps!
