Inexpensive wood crate shoe storage

My daughter has a ton of shoes that keeping them organized and in one spot was a must for her room. I used to keep them in a white beverage bucket, but whenever we had people over I would have to dump out her shoes and clean it out so it could be used for drinks.  I decided it was time to give her shoes a proper place to go that could stay in her room.   I had a yellow wood crate that I bought at Homegoods on clearance (some of the boards were loose, nothing a few nails and wood glue couldn't fix) that I kept in my room for no particular purpose.  The color was wrong for her room, but the size and shape was perfect for shoe storage.

I painted the box coral and then used gold leaf rub 'n buff on the tops of the boards.   I also added 4 caster wheels to the bottom and it was ready to be filled with shoes.

I love the pop of color that it gives to an otherwise dull corner of her room.  It also ties in with the chalkboard that I made for her closet door.

  1. Cute idea!!! I'm loving the wheels on the bottom! Pinned!

  2. What a great idea! I've been searching for some great shoe storage! The best part is you can easily roll this around to anywhere in the house. I think you can also buy similar unfinished crates at homedepot.

    1. Thank you! I'm not sure about Home Depot, but they do sell them at Michael's and other craft stores. So many great uses for unfinished crates!
