How to Make Industrial Dollar Tree Storage Jars

Basic Dollar Tree glass jars get aged and transformed into stylish industrial storage!

It's the first Monday of the month, which means it's time for another Dollar Store DIY!  I really wanted to create a Christmas project, but I resisted and went a little industrial instead.

When it comes to decorating my home, I tend to gravitate towards vintage decor that's a little old,  rusty and unique.  It's one of the many reasons why I love to shop at vintage markets and local thrift stores.   My office is full of my favorite vintage finds and these DIY rusty industrial Dollar Tree jars fit right in.

- Clorox toilet bowl cleaner with bleach
- Salt
- Fine grit sandpaper
- Steel wool or scrub sponge
- Old baking tray or another similar container
- Brass knobs

I started with these little storage jars that are perfect for organizing craft and office supplies.  I like that they are glass so you can see what's inside, but they were a little too shiny and new for my taste.

I've aged other Dollar Tree products before, but this time I had to wing it since I didn't have all the supplies I needed.   I ended up grabbing an old baking tray, Clorox, salt, sandpaper and a sponge.

I lightly sanded the top of the lids, sprayed them with Clorox, let them sit about an hour, coated them with salt then let them sit again.  I rubbed the salt all over the lid with a sponge then completed the process 2-3 times more times  Eventually, after a few hours, the lids started to age and rust.

I'm a fan of mixing metals and materials, so I dug through my stash of hardware and grabbed some old brass knobs that I saved from a previous dresser makeover.  They were a perfect size and finishing touch for the jars.
Adding knobs to lids of dollar Tree jars
I attached them to the lids with a few dabs of super glue and the jars were complete.

These Dollar Tree jars were fine as is and this makeover may not be for everyone, but I love that they are now imperfectly aged, rustic and fit in great with my vintage industrial office decor.

  1. Both ways of changing the lids are outstanding BUT, I like the Clorox and salt turn out better. 😊
I LOVE your dollar tree DIYs!
