An Easy Way to Build an Industrial Wood Coffee Table

Building a professional looking industrial style coffee table is much easier (and cheaper!) than you think!

It's Monthly DIY Challenge day!  This month,  Kreg has graciously sponsored our challenge and has also provided each of us with a Kreg R3.  I can not believe I have never used one of these handy tools before.  Seriously, have I been living in a hole?

I've built many projects in the past, but building a piece of furniture with pocket holes is a total game changer!

A few months ago we bought furniture for our living room and I have been in search of a new coffee table ever since.  I haven't been able to find one that I really like, so I decided to move our basement coffee table upstairs and build a new one for the basement.   I love being able to shop the house and rearrange furniture.  It's my favorite way to achieve a new look in a space without spending a penny.

I knew I wasn't ready to come up with my own building plans (I'm all about going out of my comfort zone, but not THAT far out), so I searched online and found plans from Ana White that were perfect.

****I followed plans from Ana White, BUT I did adjust them in order to make my table smaller to better fit our space. ****

- (4) 2x2x8 boards
- (3) 1x4x6 boards
- 2 inch wood screws
- Wood glue
- Chalk Paint - I used FAT Raven
- Mitre Saw
- Drill
- Paint Brush

Once I had my plans narrowed down and my wood purchased I was ready to bust out the Kreg and start building!  Don't let this little tool intimidate you.  Once you figure out where to set your sliders and stop collar on the drill bit (this video was super helpful) the rest is easy.

I drilled two pocket holes in each piece of wood then once all my pocket holes were drilled I started building the table.

I used new 1x4's for the top of the table, but aged them a bit to give them a slight distressed look. (Hammers and screws work really well for distressing.)  I finished off the top boards with a coat of Minwax Special Walnut and a very light coat of Minwax Jacobean before sealing it with 3 coats of water based poly.

I painted the bottom of the table using leftover FAT paint in Raven then sealed it with two coats of water based poly.

After the paint was dry I flipped the table over and attached each top board with 2 inch wood screws.

I didn't plan it, but the table ended up matching perfectly with our mixed material bookcase.

I'm pretty impressed with how my first "real" building project turned out and definetely have the itch to build another project sooner rather than later.  Maybe next time I'll try out the new Accu-Cut or Rip-Cut!

  20. Would love to enter! Unfortunately, it won't load on my browser. I'll have to keep the email in my inbox and try again later. My first project would have to be the corbels to replace the horrendous fixture in my living room and to make the house bed. Not exactly a house but some sort of frame around my bed to drape sheer valanve scarves.
