How to Cut Burlap and Make Easy Utensil Holders

It's Monthly DIY Challenge day!  This month, we worked with burlap ribbon to create 12 unique and different home decor projects.  There is such a mix of projects in this month's challenge that there is sure to be a project that fits your individual style and decor.

12 burlap projects
It's amazing how many different things you can create with simple burlap ribbon.  I thought about making a few different projects, but ended up sewing simple burlap place card utensil holders.

The hardest part of this entire craft was cutting the burlap in a straight line.  If you have ever tried to cut burlap without a technique then you know it's pretty much an impossible task.  BUT, the good news is there is a simple trick to cutting the perfect straight line.

All you need to do is cut one string of the burlap at the edge then pull it all the way through. You'll be left with a little gap that you can follow to cut a perfect straight line.  How cool and easy is that?  I did this on both ends of my burlap, so I had about an 8 inch piece of burlap.

Now that I had a perfectly cut line I needed to make sure the burlap didn't unravel.  Using a zig zag stitch (on my sewing machine) I ran a hem along both ends of the cut burlap.

Once the ends of the cut burlap were secure I folded the burlap over and ran a hem along the edge to create a pouch.

To dress up the utensil holders I added a band of fabric tape then created a label using a piece of leftover faux leather and a small metal label holder.   These are the times when a well stocked craft stash come in handy :)
