DIY Rolling Storage Box {Monthly DIY Challenge}

It's time for another edition of #MonthlyDIYChallenge!  I always look forward to our monthly challanges and couldn't be more excited about this months theme, organizing and storage solutions!  January tends to be month where everyone is purging and organizing, so this couldn't come at a better time.

My son is Lego obsessed and received more legos for Christmas than I can count.  I admit, I thought it was great that he started getting into legos until I realized I would be the one putting most of them together and keeping them organized.  Seems that he enjoys playing with the finished trucks rather than the actual building part.  Hmm.

So far, I've managed to keep all the different pieces together by placing each set in plastic bags with their insturctions.  The real challenge was storing the completed Lego trucks so that they didn't get damaged.  I can't tell you how many times my son has come to me crying to fix one of his broken trucks or find a lost piece.  Lego storage was definitely needed!

First, I decided what size box I wanted then cut my wood accordingly.   Once I had all my pieces cut I used wood glue to attach the sides to the base of the box.

I had planned on shooting in a few nails with the nail gun, but the wood glue held surprisingly well that I didn't worry about the extra support.

After the glue was completely dry I stained the wood with my favorite Minwax Jacobean stain, dry brushed a coat of Martha Stewart vintage decor paint then sanded the entire box to give it a distressed look.

I opted for custom handles using rope, screws and metal straps (found in the electrical department).

Owen was so excited about his new box and couldn't wait to neatly park all his newly built Lego trucks inside.  I love the fact that the caster wheels allow the box to easily roll right under his bed, perfect!

  16. Super cute! How are the rope handles holding up? Are they purely decorative, or can you actually pull and lift the box by them?

    1. Thanks Sara! I have had to fix one handle after my son tried to pick up the box with it. They are mostly decorative, but they work great for pulling the box in and out from under his bed. I just wouldn't pick up the box with them.
