November DIY Challenge: Painted Wood Slice Hooks

Are you all ready for another #MonthlyDIYChallenge?

This months challenge required us to use wood slices in some sort of home decor project.  I have to admit, my wood slices definitely went through a few transformations before I ended up with my final design.
We had a pretty rough winter last year and sadly my favorite 30+ year old tree didn't survive the harsh conditions.  I was devastated that we had to cut down yet another tree but that also meant we had plenty of dry wood for our fireplace or in this case, wood slices :)
I really wanted to do photo transfer ornaments, but I wasn't happy with how they turned out.  You may remember that I used this technique for truck artwork in my son's room.  I LOVE how they look in his room, but turns out it's almost impossible to get light facial features to appear on light wood.  Total project fail, time for plan B.
I started by screwing in small ORB hooks into the bottom of each wood slice.

I've been crushing on navy lately, so I grabbed some paint from my paint stash and painted the fronts of each piece of wood.
I thought it would be fun to label them 1, 2 and 3, although as soon as I started painting I knew it was another project fail.  UGH!
I took a break from the project for a few days so I could brainstorm ideas and that's when it hit me, arrows!  I love arrows and I love gold, so I combined the two and it was a winner.
I painted over the stenciled wood slices and ended up free handing arrows onto each one using a gold permanent marker.  I mean, you can't go wrong with arrows, right?  I also outlined the edge of each piece of wood using the same marker.  It was kind of frustrating not having my original plan work out, but it just goes to show DIY doesn't always go as planned.

Now it's time to check out all the other fabulous and creative ideas, but before you go, be sure to stop back on December 10th for our glass ornament challenge!
